In 1997 I made my first trip to Nepal. It was during this trip I found the 3Sisters Trekking Company. But this discovery was after I had made a solo trek to Annapurna Base Camp. I just loved walking in the mountains, so the next year (1998) I returned to Nepal, and was able to arrange a male guide through the company, again to Annapurna Base Camp. I met Lucky, Nicky and Dicky, and found their work so inspiring that I decided that I wanted to stay in touch. It was not until 2019 that I was able to make my third trip to Nepal, with Sophie, my ex-wife. 3Sisters were able to help us by advising safe trekking routes, and arranging two female guides. During the trip I injured my right ankle, so Sophie continued the trek with her guide, and I returned, slowly, by foot and bus, to the 3Sisters Guest House, with my guide. The support we got from the 3Sisters company was amazing! They made us feel like part of the family.
I made my fourth trip to Nepal in 2023. Of course by this time I was older and not nearly as fit as I had been many years ago. I wanted to introduce my friend, Rabina, to the three sisters. Again, their amazing hospitality made us feel like part of their family. I cannot recommend the company too highly, they are just wonderful, and their work in encouraging and supporting female guides has changed the history of guiding in Nepal. They have, and continue to break new ground in guiding and in promoting female inclusion in the workplace of Nepal. I wish them every success and happiness in the future!
I had the best time volunteering with 3 Sisters and trekking to Annapurna Base Camp, via Poon Hill. I learnt so much about Nepalese culture and traditions and my life has been enriched by my experience.
I stayed in 3 Sisters Guest House which was very comfortable, with a lovely green courtyard garden and breakfast options. The staff were friendly and we exchanged a few Namastes every day!
I taught English in the office classroom which I enjoyed. The trainee guides were really enthusiastic and inspiring! We also played football on the roof – fun times! It was also my pleasure to help out with bits and pieces in the office too.
I undertook a 9 day trek to Annapurna Base Camp with guide Puspa and assistant guide Ramsara. They were great and I learnt so much from them – around every corner there was a surprise and something new to see – with Puspa and Ramsara pointing out flora and fauna throughout the trek and answering all my curious questions. The days were well planned with just the right amount of walking time per day. We were rewarded with a clear 360° panorama on the morning at A.B.C. I have memories that will last a life time. Congratulations on your 25th year anniversary – keep doing what you do.
From a volunteer teaching English at EWN for over 15 years.
What an amazing, constantly changing experience. From my first classrooms where the students almost exclusively wore traditional clothes and had never seen a mobile to recent classes where most students wear jeans and all have mobiles. To discover some of these students had walked over mountains and taken days to reach the opportunities offered by EWN was truly humbling. Over the years I saw some of these students become senior guides, having a choice in their lives, forming friendships with people from all over the world. Becoming confident, professional young women who could earn their own living.
And always the friendship of Lucky, Nicky and Dicky. Sharing their home, life and family. I feel truly blessed to have taken part in such an adventure and wish everyone continued success in future years.
Congratulations on a quarter century of incredible work!!
In 1993 we were running a restaurant and a lodge in Pokhara. We met women from all over the world and came across some who had bad experiences with their male guides. These stories touched us and we resolved to do something.
Lucky, Dicky and Nicky Chhetri are three Nepalese sisters and pioneers in the field of female trekking guides. Since 1994, they have worked towards empowering women in Nepal through their trekking agency 3 Sisters Adventure Trekking and their NGO Empowering Women of Nepal. Entering an uncharted territory In the early ‘90s, no one would have dreamed of a Nepalese woman guiding a trek. In Nepalese society, a woman receives less education and is expected to stay at home. In this society, many women are not allowed or encouraged to work outside.
Empowering Women of Nepal is a grassroots non-profit organization that was registered in 1999 under Nepal’s Social Organization Act 2034 (1977). EWN aims to empower, educate and create employment opportunities to improve the lives of disadvantaged Nepali women and girls through adventure tourism and sports. It was founded by three Nepalese sisters, Lucky, Dicky and Nicky Chhetri, who were pioneers in the promotion of female trekking guides in the Himalayas.
